Counseling & Therapy

Counseling & Therapy

Life is difficult. All of us need the help and care of others. Seeking counseling is a brave step in that direction.

Who can benefit from counseling?

At Crossroads, we appreciate the courage it takes to start the counseling process. We have had the privilege of seeing children, teenagers, and all ages of adults truly benefit from the process of meeting with one our providers. We certainly hope that clients will reap the rewards of their work in the process. But also, the family members and others who interact with the client often benefit as well. When we are stronger, healthier, and in better head-space, we tend to have healthier relationships. And that benefits everyone!

How does this work? What's the process?

We start with listening.

Your first step is to call us to schedule your initial appointment. We work hard to pair you with a therapist that we believe will be the best fit for you and your current challenges and goals.

The initial evaluation session provides an opportunity for you to build rapport with the therapist or counselor and provide them with some background about yourselves and the reasons you are seeking counseling. In addition, they will be able to answer your questions regarding services, confidentiality, and what to expect in therapy. With your best interests in mind, you will decide together what kind of treatment will benefit you the most.

At the end of the first session, if you decide to move forward, you will be asked to schedule further appointments. At your second appointment, you will work with your therapist to set goals for your overall therapy experience and then begin working together towards achieving them.

What is the difference between counseling and therapy?

“Is there a difference between therapy and counseling?” We often get this question. These terms are used by many to mean the same thing. But, technically, they are different. Counseling is a general term that can refer to a vast array of areas where someone is seeking the expertise of another. Whereas, therapy is a more specific term. When we use the term “therapy” in the area of mental health services, we are referring to “psychotherapy.” Psychotherapy is a specific service which involves the therapist conducting  an evaluation/assessment with a client, assigning a mental health diagnosis based on the results of the assessment, and then providing psychotherapeutic interventions to mitigate the symptoms of the mental health disorder.
